PORTSMOUTH FC defender Linvoy Primus was on the radio today, on Radio 2’s Pause for Thought slot.
Not the typical place you would expect to find a top drawer Premiership defender, admittedly, but Primus was taking a break from the usual football talk about taking each game as it comes and giving 110% to talk about his faith.
When fellow Pompey stars Benjamin Mwaruwari and Nwankwo Kanu joined the club, he revealed, the three of them decided to pray together before matches. Now most of the squad join in and judging by Portsmouth’s position in the table, it’s paying off.
One of the very few similarities between Premiership football clubs and newspaper offices is that anybody who is a Christian is immediately different and viewed with some degree of suspicion – but Primus’ story was extremely inspirational.
As a member of a very small church, we are constantly trying to bring new people in, and hold services – like the one at Liverpool College School, North Mossley Hill Road, Mossley Hill, Liverpool on Sunday March 25 – specifically designed for non-Christians and those who are curious about God.
I have always shied away from trying to introduce people to my church, partly because I go to church in Wirral and the overwhelming majority of Echo staff live in Liverpool, but chiefly because I’m nervous.
If anybody reading this wants to prove me wrong, and show that Liverpool is more than a city of cynics, leave a comment and get in touch. You’ll be glad you did.
